Đọc THÁC ĐỔ SAU NHÀ và NGUYÊN-VẸN của Võ-Phiến / A WATERFALL BEHIND THE HOUSE and CRYSTAL LOVE by Võ-Phiến

Quynh Nguyen, Botanical Gardens, NYS. Waterfall and River. Oil on Canvas, 1986-2015.

This writing comes from memory in remembrance of Võ-Phiến, without actual references at hand. Besides, for not being a literary critic, especially on Vietnamese Literature, I offer this apology.

Of Võ-Phiến, or Đoàn Thế-Nhơn’s penname, I have never thought in terms of friendship, but always with my respect for his deep and exquisite writing, to maintain unique acquaintance, for almost five decades. He is about twenty years senior to me. By chance, in the mid-sixties I came across “A Waterfall behind the House”, reprinted in some journal completely distant in my conundrum. It was a short story, originally published in an anthology of his works, Moonlight in a Spring Night. It was very impressive for its visionary and flowing impetus completely different from the author’s physiognomy that I met before the second phase of the Tet Offensive 1968.

1. A WATER FALL BEHIND THE HOUSE (a short story, 1956)

The wilderness background offers some shots of intoxicating nectar of nature, enough to lull a care free woman into wonderful sleep that soon turned into a dream by a man’s dexterity; if human body were an instrument, then his fingers like spring breeze nurtured desire. For her innocence, that dream only returned amidst boisterous laughers in one evening party, for the seductive voice to resurrect. That voice, which once came forward her unceremoniously and magically caressed hidden desire to her heavenly climatic instinct of human nature. Would she have been led on? The reader has no certainty but only continued to read beyond fine letters.

2. CRYSTAL LOVE (a novel, 1978)

To translate the title Nguyên-Vẹn, my English version Crystal Love captures the novel content to represent Võ-Phiến’s play of double meanings, the pristine or original state of love, and the uncertainty for love is breakable because it is so human that no one can resist opportunity and temptation and that raises the question of securing harmony both crystal-like and ephemeral impossible. The 1975 Vietnamese Diaspora exposed the test of survival instinct and the traditional culture of value using contradictory mosaic images, of hope as well as of alienation, of unity as well as separation. In such a dramatic destiny, there came a young woman named Zung (Dung) in looking for her boy friend in any point of space and time breathlessly expanding and contracting psychologically. In such a leeway of her uncertainty, ridiculous encounters led in such as the case of Triêm, a family man in his middle-age, a fine devoutee of Buddhist teaching practice daily, only at night he turned wildly in bed with his wife who was amazed but did not realize that her husband was penetrating other women in fantasy. It is a wonderful exposition of psychiatry diagnose without knowing Freudian dream interpretations that prompted me to publish a note in the book review section of Viêtnam Culture Journal, Volume One, Number One, 1981, in New York City.

I am not interested in making any conclusive statements after reading the last page of a fine literary work, instead of evaluating the process of thinking as the reader myself regardless of the author present or not.
